Brighter Days is one of the most formidable soulful House and deep House nights in Britain right now and really caught the SSW teams eye. It’s refreshing that the event is run by a female too, Sarah Day is kickin’ ass in the university city of Cambridge with this hugely respected party that invites guests such as Trouble Anderson and Grant Nelson along to throw down. Goldmine DJ Scott Malcolm travels from Scotland to Brighter Days regularly also as a bonafide BD resident.
Blackwax or just plain Steve Reed as his mum calls him has been mastering the craft of DJing and fine tuning his personnel skills for some twenty years now and is the first of two Brighter Days residents to play the pool party. His musical influences are as broad and interesting as his sets are eclectic and eyebrow raising. He meanders through musical genres with ease in his sets, whilst sticking firmly to the path of Soul, Hip Hop, Disco and of course House music that kept him focused on his DJ journey, he loves to visit all these genres in his sets.
As a producer Steve has released tracks with notable artists and labels including Tone Control Music, Pirahnahead, Poji Records, Jazzloungerz, Canvas, SOL, Soul Free, A Deeper Groove, Soulfunktion and Tony Humphries’ well quoted Tony Records. As a DJ Steve strives to constantly evolve and keeps forging ahead but he does glance back now and again for inspiration and a musical compass reference. He holds down residencies at Bump N Hustle in Bournemouth, Vocal Booth Weekender in Spain and is a Brighter Days regular in Cambridge.
Although Lil’ Joey and Steve aka Blackwax are not a DJ tag team per say, they are thrust together behind the decks at Brighter Days. From an early age there were a lot of musical influences in Joey’s life too, mainly filtering down through his father’s Jazz collection. Being brought up on a blend of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington really sculpted the way he listened to music.
The early days of Joey’s DJ career saw his personal style influenced by Lil’ Louie Vega, David Morales, Junior Vasquez and Joey Negro. Lil’ Joey as gigged all over the UK, Sweden, Ibiza, and Amsterdam. These travels have thrown Joey onto the same bill as StoneBridge, Eddie Thoneik, ATFC and Thomas Gold, to name a handful. He is resident for StoneBridge And Friends and Soul Fusion and promotes his own Spread The Love and House Bound parties in his home town of Gloucester. Expect some deep and soulful shiz from the lil’ fella that packs a big House punch. Look out for the new Brighter Days website, soon come.
